AN EXCERPT FROM Hello all- Sorry it's taken so long, but getting all settled in after Park City was quite a chore. Originally a somewhat bitter and crazed essay on Park City and Sundance was to have been posted, but things have been put into perspective thanks to our mysterious friend known only as Mastah Cow. With his gargantuan, nine foot, 576 lb. frame, his looming physical presence is easily matched by a prodigious intellect and a gentle, melodious voice that streams through the air like limpid pools of gentle comfort and limitless compassion. Here's what he had to say(Please note my Aramaic is rusty so my English translation may lack the proper nuance): "Sure Sundance has totally misappropriated the term 'Independent Film' and the actions of Park City towards filmmakers is unreasonable, but to propose an attack on either institution is not addressing the fundamental problem that Sundance's stature exists because those in the Indie Film community allow it to be. Sundance is not, nor has ever been, the be-all, end-all of Independent Film. There are many other venues and outlets for individual cinematic expression far beyond those ten days in a resort town in Utah. By elevating Sundance to the status of the 'Heart of American Independent Film', not only is the term 'Independent Film' undermined, but the actual artistic community that functions under it.The only proper way to protest Sundance is not through ACLU court action or riots on Main Street, but by ignoring the Park City festivities altogether. In this way, Sundance will be seen in it's correct light and screenings at other festivals or through MicroCinema venues will be given the proper respect and attention they deserve. As learned philosophers have noted, a god cannot exist if it has no worshipers." Now on to "Park City 2002: A Photographic Record"
