Massawyrm's INDIE INDIE column - Wanna See Me's Sweet
Indies I've Been Telling Ya Swabs About? CLICK HERE
Hey folks, Harry here. For a fella that looks so much like
the Almighty, it is amazing what he does to himself. It's
like, he ain't so much as dying for our sins as he is taking
all of our sins in. Maybe this is the adverse effect of
watching all these INDIES all the time, but between that glass
pipe with the blow torch accessory, the 14 lit cigarettes and
the IVs of DP... He's just getting weirder and weirder. But, I
guess it is healthy. His complexion is a rather nice paisley
pattern, I'd swear he was a 60's radical Maori version of
Christ, but that's just silly. Today he was mumbling out
chapters of CATCHER IN THE RYE, but now he seems more normal,
giving us the latest and the greatest ways to catch the
flickering image of the indies he's been suggesting for us.
Here ya go....
Hola all. Everyone's favorite Chain-smoking, Dr. Pepper
Swilling, Indie Schilling, Insulation installing cheap day
laborer Massawyrm here with a brief report on the cool films
I've discussed in recent weeks and where you can find a few of
them.
Since this column began, I've sifted through stacks and
stacks of indies and watched damn near 200 features and shorts
to bring you the absolute coolest of the undistributed cool.
Now as the weeks have flown by, some of the films I've seen
and discussed have made their way to venues where you too can
find them and decide whether you think they're as cool as I
do. This will become a regular part of my weekly column, once
more of the features get distribution or play at festivals
near you.
First and foremost, my big news:
Remember that little Dogme film I discussed a few weeks
earlier called "Bad Actors"? Well, if you don't read about it
here CLICK
HERE Well, the Director Shaun Monson is bringing it to
Austin for all to see. He's read on the site for years and
heard me gloat about how cool and interested in indie film
Austin audiences are, so he's booked a flight and booked the
Alamo Drafthouse (Downtown Location) to show his film for
free. I'll be there with bells on to host this little shindig
and Shaun will be on hand to discuss the film and answer any
questions about the film and upcoming projects. So all you
Austinites, stand at attention and get your keisters down to
the Alamo Drafthouse next Saturday and make this screening a
success.
For those of you outside of Austin, Bad Actors will also
be screening at the Alexandria Film Festival in Cairo, Egypt
as well as the New York International Independent Film &
Video Festival. Here's all the dates:
August 11, 2001 Massawyrm's Indie Indie Review
Screening Alamo Drafthouse 3:00 p.m.
September 7, 2001 Alexandria Film Festival Dogme
95 Competition Alexandria, Egypt
September 7-14 New York International Independent
Film & Video Festival Madison Square Garden New
York, NY
Now, then there's this little film I discussed last week
called Lethal Force. Now I don't know how much this came out
in last weeks review CLICK
HERE but this movie is some serious fun. I really wish I
could attend one of these upcoming screenings, but alas they
are quite a ways away. These, I'm sure, are gonna be some
great theatre audience shows. I received a press release from
the Lethal Force boys this week revealing the massive amounts
of nominations they received from the 2001 B-Movie Theatre
Film Fest to be held on September 15-16 in Syracuse, New York
(for more info, check out CLICK HERE
)The nominations are as follows:

Best B-Movie Director (Alvin Ecarma)
Best B-Movie Writer (Alvin Ecarma)
Best B-Movie Actor (Cash Flagg, Jr.)
Best Supporting B-Movie Actor (Frank Prather)
Best Supporting B-Movie Actress (Patricia Williams)
Best B-Movie Photography/Cinematography (Eric Thornett)

Best B-Movie Music
Best B-Movie Make-up (Danny Fielding F/X Squad)
Best B-Movie Special Effects (Danny Fielding F/X Squad)
Best B-Movie Villain (Cash Flagg, Jr.)
Best B-Movie Action Sequence
So, good luck to the folks behind this film, and for
those interested, you can see this movie here:
2001 Guerrilla Film & Video Festival taking place
from August 10-12 at the Tribeca Film. It will be screened on
Saturday, August 11 as part of Program#2 @ 1pm along w/
various shorts; the short film portion begins at 1pm and
LETHAL FORCE begins at 2pm. Seating is limited. For ticket
info and fest info, please go to the Guerrilla Fest website at
718-837-5736.
And of course the aforementioned B-movie fest.
And how about that masterpiece of comedic noir, Black
Days, which you can read about here CLICK
HERE Well, this little brilliant piece is also playing at
the 2001 Guerrilla Film & Video Festival. This one is
playing the night before Lethal Force, Friday August 10th,
2001 as part of Program 1 beginning at 8pm. It's $10 and you
can get all the info from the same info as listed above.
Just think, you NYC people can see TWO films showcased
here in my column! Woo Hoo! But all humor aside, please come
out and support both these fine, entertaining films at this
cool fest.
And How about that H.R. Pukenshette. This sick little
film, reviewed here CLICK
HERE has been making the rounds pretty regularly. It's
apparently playing at the Red Bank International Film Festival
on Aug. 16th as part of the locals showcase (6-8pm). Find out
more here CLICK HERE
And finally for everyone else out there not in Austin,
New York, New Jersey or Egypt (wow, I can officially say
someone's film is playing in BFE and mean it! I mean, how
often does that happen?). A really cool short film I reviewed
in my first column called "The Flock" is now available for viewing on
ifilm.com. After contacting the director, I discovered that
he's a regular in the Chatroom here on the site (although he
is not affiliated to the site in any way) so this is a great
way for you to check out a very cool short and then possibly
meet up with him in chat and pick his brain.
I really enjoyed this film, and still do, as it is in my
small little screening library that I share with fellow AICN
crew whenever they visit the Casa de la Wyrm, located in
spacious central Austin. I've seen this film somewhere between
six and twelve times and my appreciation for the subtle
storytelling grows every time I view it. You can find it here
CLICK
HERE and my hope is that you enjoy it as well.
Well all, after a long and busy week of screenings,
watching your tapes (hope to have some new ones to review for
you next week), and picking Harry's bunions and soothing his
corns, I grow weary. I will be collapsing now. I'll see you
all next Monday. And if anywhere in this column it says that I
smoke crack, know that that is my doing... it's an old habit I
acquired in Rome, and is good for you in moderation,
especially in your pre-teen years, it helps you to appreciate
RETURN OF THE JEDI. For all you independent filmmakers
(especially you Investigating Sex and Mortal Transfer
directors McQuarrie was raving about...LET ME SEE YOUR
FILMS!!!!) please send your indies for review in Massawyrm's
Indie Indie Revue to this address:
Massawyrm 3408 Red River Austin, TX. 78705
Well, Until next week folks, Smoke 'em if ya got 'em. I
know I will.
